Creating Logo – Part II – Fundamentals of Designing a Logo

Simplicity: Simple things are more impactful. They are easy to understand and easy to relate with. A person has a very limited time to look at the logo hence the complexity in the nature of art is not something recommended here.


Memorable: Just after simplicity comes a logo that is memorable. The simplicity aids in this process. A logo should be catchy enough to be remembered.


Enduring: An effective logo should be future proof. With minor modification it should suit the age, hence make a logo that is robust. And can stand against the test of time. Designing a logo that is enduring is difficult because you have to forecast and see if it will stand the test of time.


Color: Color is really important in any brand. Certain colors evoke certain emotions and both designer and the client should always be aware of appropriate colors. Design logo that suits the company’s color palette.


Kerning: Make sure that you pay enough attention to this. If you are using letters in your logo then pay a close attention to kerning. Kerning is the process of adjusting spacing between characters in a proportional font. In return it gives a visually pleasing result.

Versatile: An effective logo should be able to work across a variety of mediums and applications. Certain logos are just a representation of a company and not the particular product. For example the logo of Nike which is an abstract of the goddess ‘Nike’, it also has another meaning that is movement and speed, this logo can suit multiple products and not just shoes. Try and design logo that will fit not just one product but different products under the same brand name. This is one of the major characteristics of any logo design.
